Onward Technologies Ltd.: overview
Onward Technologies Limited (NSE: ONWARDTEC | BSE: 517536 | Market Cap: ~INR 950 Cr) is a digital engineering and ER&D services partner to global OEMs across North America and Europe. Q2 FY27 was its best quarter yet, with the highest-ever quarterly revenue of INR 170.2 Cr and an EBITDA margin of 15.6%. Building on this momentum, management has upgraded its FY27 guidance from “double-digit” growth to 15–18% revenue growth and a 13.8–14.3% EBITDA margin. The upgrade already factors in AI-led productivity impact, with most of the hiring it needs is already in place. The quarter reflects Onward Tech’s strategy of focusing on fewer, larger client relationships, supported by emerging opportunities in data-centre engineering, a debt-free balance sheet and capacity being built ahead of demand. The stock hit a new 52-week high on the day, though it continues to trade at a discount to its ER&D peers.
Account Mining and Wallet Share
Client Focus: Onward Tech has narrowed its active client base from 145 in FY22 to 72, to invest behind fewer, larger relationships. Revenue per client has grown 3.6x over the same period.
Million-Dollar Accounts: 18 clients bill over US$1 Mn, up from 16 a year ago and 11 in FY22.
Wallet Share: Quarterly revenue per client rose 26% YoY to INR 2.4 Cr. Top-25 clients contribute ~87% of revenue, largely on multi-year MSAs.
Longer Commitments: A global construction and mining equipment leader renewed its three-year digital services contract at INR 44.5 Cr, 72% above the previous term, and committed the full three years upfront instead of issuing POs every six to twelve months.
The Way Forward: Onward Tech is bidding for several large RFPs within existing accounts. Management’s vision is for each client to approach ~US$10 Mn in annual revenue.
USA-Led: The USA’s share of revenue rose to 41% from 34% a year ago.
Upgraded Guidance and Growth Drivers
FY27 Outlook: Upgraded from “double-digit” growth to 15–18% revenue growth and a 13.8–14.3% EBITDA margin, implying roughly INR 625–640 Cr of revenue and INR 86–92 Cr of EBITDA (+20–28% YoY). This already factors in new US onsite regulations and some AI-led productivity impact.
Data Centres: Onward Tech’s industrial clients make the power, cooling and electrical equipment behind AI data centres, and they need engineers fast. In June, Onward Tech won a INR 33 Cr contract to set up an offshore R&D centre for a power management leader’s data-centre unit. It also recently re-engineered a 5 MW liquid-cooling distribution unit for a data-centre OEM.
Broadening Verticals: Rail has grown for several quarters and automotive is recovering after last year’s European shutdowns. In Healthcare & Life Sciences, Onward Tech has added some of North America’s biggest brands and sees the vertical where Industrial was two years ago.
AI as a Lever: The work is engineering-heavy rather than IT, so clients are asking for productivity gains, not smaller workloads. The Chennai AI Lab is expected to be operational by Q4 FY27.
Margin Levers: Offshore delivery (~69% of revenue), higher utilisation and delivery discipline are structural, and management sees further upside. The aspiration is INR 30–40 lakh of revenue per employee, against ~INR 22 lakh today.
Financial Position and Capacity
Balance Sheet: Debt-free with net cash of INR 97.1 Cr, a FY26 ROCE of 25.4% and 11 consecutive years of dividends. Management plans to deploy cash proactively behind customer opportunities.
Capacity: 432 net hires in H1 FY27 took the workforce to 2,917. Onward Tech opened another design centre in Pune this month, which is expected to fill by November–December, and has signed for more seats. A few hundred more hires are planned across Q4 FY27 and Q1 FY28.
Talent Moat: 90+ in-house recruiters hire experienced engineers from the shop floor rather than campuses, then train them in-house. This lets Onward Tech ramp up at the speed clients expect.
Valuation
Onward Tech’s ROE of ~18% is above the ER&D peer median of ~16%. Yet even after the post-results rally, it trades at ~20x TTM earnings, a ~40% discount to the peer median of ~34x.
Net of cash, its enterprise value of ~INR 855 Cr is ~9–10x the EBITDA implied by FY27 guidance.
As account mining compounds and margins hold, the gap with peers leaves room for further upside.
